JD 4720 SCV failure

The loader on my machine will not rise more than a foot. The dealer has told me that a seal has blown inside the spool control. It will take 4 to 5 hours to repair. I have the cab over model. This has really ------ me off. The machine only has 290 hrs on it. And only 40 of it was working the loader. I bought the machine used so there is no warranty. I want to repair it myself but the service manual does not give a mechanical breakdown of the internal parts. Does anyone have info on how to repair this condition?

You can view and print out one page or all of the parts catalog as needed for FREE without signing up. However, to check parts availability and price you have to sign up through a dealer.

One thought... could there be a hydraulic coupler involved in that loader circuit that is not fully plugged in or defective... the problem you are seeing is typical of what happens when there's a coupler problem.

Better take a closer look? Your dealer diagnosis sound a little missed? Spool valves dont have seals to blow that will cause this kind of failure. I would check to see that all hydraulic quick connect hose couplings are completly connected. Sounds like you may not be getting return oil from your two way loader cylinders back into control valve. Problem could be loader cylinder related but check your hydraulic coupler connections first. Good Luck DW

Buying one second hand should not affect the warranty. Too many years gone by and/or hours will though.

Thank you BOB and WTW! You were both right! One of the hoses was not fully coupled. You both saved me a $300 bill. And thank you Yesterdays tractor! I am so happy! Its back working great again!

I think it was more like they just don't know what they are doing at that dealership. When I got the tractor from them, they never checked anything on it. Hoses on the loader were all loose,the engine oil was not changed, and all I got was a line of BS on how good their service was. Thanks again for being so helpful! You really made my day!

I second what Mike M stated about the JD warranty should still be valid if age of tractor and hours of use weren't too high.

The Dealer told me it was out of warranty back in July of 08. I don't know how many years JD allows. They never told me the age of the tractor. I am guessing maybe 3 - 4 years. It was in very clean shape with only 175 hrs on the clock.
