JD 4840 Trans shaft ??

Working on a 4840. When I was tearing down to pull the planetary brake pack, I had a time getting the clutch pack to planetary shafts to come out. Had to pull the Pto bearing and all three shafts had to come together. I was into a 4440 not long ago and the rings on the shafts were on the same end and the shafts could be pulled and the hollow shaft was left. I pulled the bearing race retaining snap and used a nail and slide hammer and pulled the hollow shaft, just like the book described. 4840 Had the snap ring on the high range shaft behind the pto hollow shaft and it all had to come together. The book isn?t plain on the shafts and the parts book shows the transmission ring to the rear of the high range shaft. I also noticed that the way it was in the tractor the bushing in the middle shaft didn?t have a lube hole lined up with it. I was able to swap ends with the shaft to make it like the 4440 but I haven?t installed the bearing race yet to finish, was hoping someone could enlighten me on the correct way the middle shaft was supposed to be. The small shaft will only go one way, so the question is the high range shaft direction, as it will go either way. Lastly I haven?t put a mic on the low range shaft where it?s mating into the bushing, but it felt nice and I?m wondering if this thing was put together wrong once before.

The design and operation are the same on both transmissions,, I never tried to put a shaft in that way,, so I don't know if it will even go in backwards..

So are you saying that you Should be able to remove the C1/C2 shafts from the planetary pack without removing PTO bearing snap ring and bearing cone?
