JD #5 mower remove crankshaft

Are you attempting to remove the lower shaft from the the housing. If so a cap(item20 or 29) will require removal first before crankshaft can be removed & an outer brg race removed.

View attachment 113180.
IIRC, (and it's been a while) the "flywheel" (Key #18) has to come off so the shaft can move "frontwards" or to allow access to the cover bolts Key #19.

With the bolts out there's nothing to hold "20" in place other than rust and/or tough old gasket sealer.
I think Conservation man has removed bolts on the opposite end of shaft where sprocket(item 27) was located. Now outer brg race(item 23) must be removed before shaft can be removed from gearbox.

Wow , Started this in MAy and finally have time to put it back together. I don't see a gasket for the cap ( #20)
Should Iput some gasket sealer on it anyway? RTV?
thanks
Wally

There's NO gasket under the 2-bolt flange, #21 is a selective shim or shims that fits next to the bearing race to set the shaft endplay. Once it's determined that is correct you can put some shellac or other "thin" gasket sealant on it or them.

I would GUESS a TINY amount of endplay or a slight amount of pre-load would be what you are seeking.
