I'm getting ready to redo the bar on my old jd 5 mower. I have cut many tens of thousands of bales with this mower over the years but switched to a NI cutditioner a couple years ago to avoid clogging. Now I want both running as well as possible. I guess I have just used whatever sections on the jd5 seemed to cut the best but what do folks recommend as good for cutting thick hay? I see on Webb cutting components I can get the whole knife for $150. Anyone used one from them? Also, what is the best way to replace or sharpen ledger plates-- maybe just buy new guards?

Some guards have replaceable ledgers. Or, if not severely worn, you can use a hand grinder to sharpen ledgers or guards with built in ledgers. Once guards are worn or sharpened beyond the heat treat area the only option is to replace.

We usually used smooth sickle sections, especially for grass. I have some good used complete sickles and one NOS. Also have some new JD rock guards if you need some. Good luck with your restoration project.

If you can put the new style double guards on it and never look back .

We use top serrated sections to cut thick Bahiagrass hay here on the farm in NE Texas.

Bahiagrass is a tough grass to cut here in Texas.

We bought our last knife, 9ft top serrated sections secured with nuts and screws from Webb.

Highly recommend a "[i:654c4848f0]whole knife[/i:654c4848f0]" with sections secured by nuts and screws.

Agree with [b:654c4848f0]SVcummins[/b:654c4848f0] that "[i:654c4848f0]If you can put the new style double guards on it and never look back[/i:654c4848f0]".

The new style guards will fit the JD No. 5 cutter bar same as they fit his JD No. 8 cutter bar.

The new style guards are smooth without the ledger plate.

Any knife section whether you choose either smooth, bottom serrated, or top serrated will work.

Hope this helps.

I bought new complete knives for the no.8 at bomgarrs for 120$ they?re great I did have to modify the knife head a little bit but that didn?t take long with the cutoff wheel . The sections aren?t the best quality but they?re all right for the cost I?ve put 30 acres of wild hay and gopher mounds through mine and I think I can get this year out of em then I?ll swap my other new one in and then rebuild the other one with John Deere sections They are a lot tougher than the harvest king brand . I?m running top smooth bottom serrated sections

Yes.

You will probably need to use high arch hold down clips to "[i:654c4848f0]clear[/i:654c4848f0]" the lock nuts that are available from Herschell Parts or TSC.

Take a look at the photo below of Herschell high arch clips.
