JD 50 oil canister

I will clarify, the oil filter canister was completely taken out of the crankcase on a rebuild. Now I need to reinstall it back into the crankcase housing hole. The manual calls for using white lead. There has to be something else.

I have done some in the past,but honestly I can't remember putting anything on them. I think the other answers were correct in that the cover and it's gasket will seal it from the outside. Maybe just some lube to aid in drawing it down in with some plates and allthread. You could always put some permetex on it.

White lead compounds were also used as lubricants for bearings and in machine shops, especially between work being turned in a lathe and a dead center.[

so maybe it not for sealing,maybe its used as a lube. bill
