Jd 500 baler

Hi, I'm keeping my eye on a jd 500 round baler on online auction. I'm not in desperate need of it, I have a deal with my neighbor
Where I get to use his baler and it works well for the both of us. I'm just kinda interested in this baler, and want to know the good and bad? Other balers on this auction are around 1,000 or more. This baler is near the bottom of the listing and at $8 right now, I believe the auction says it work I'm going to call tomorrow and find out more. I'm well aware this baler will go for much more and I dont need it just curious. Fyi auction ends Tuesday.

There is a reason its only at $8. They were the very first round baler JD made it they didn't work that good. I would look at something different.

I would be surprised if it makes it to $1000. Deere did not make very good bakers until the 4/535s. And did not really get good until the 7 series. The models earlier than the 7 series were ok, but either no netwrap, or a poorer netwrap system. I have a 469ss and it is a tough baler.

Find a 430 530 435 or 535 they will bale anything you should bale and are simple and reliable and can be ran without a monitor if you want . But if you can get it cheap it might work for what you want but there’s nothing worse than a baler that won’t work

It’ll scrap for 150 with scrap the way it is so for 8$ and it won’t do what you want you’d still be ok

Great that's what I needed to know! Thanks guys if it goes cheap enough and I could make enough out of scrap if I decided I didn't like it like SV said I'll probably pull the trigger, we'll see.

JD model 500 was JD's 1st POOR attempt at building a rd baler. It was closed throat with a large belt that bale is formed on & sits on. IMHO it's worth no more than what it will scrap out for. The wheels/tires have the most of the value.

Really. Later model JD rd balers since mid 80's are very far from scrap! I've baled over 150,000 rd bales with JD rd balers with very few problems. My JD rd baler before present baler had 30,000 bales on monitor when I traded it to get netwrap & present baler has 26,000+ bales. I read on other discussion forums where some other color rd balers need major repairs in less than 10,000 bales. One couldn't run fast enough to give me a rd baler with sledge rollers & gears.

I only bale hay at or below 15% moisture IE I've never baled any high moisture hay.

Cowboy, for future reference (Tx Jim can confirm this im sure), the 410 / 510 JD round balers were the 2nd attempt by JD and they are equally as bad so stay away from those as well unless you enjoy struggling with machinery.

Starting with the 430/530 JD round balers were as good as
the competition if not better then some. You want to POS
balers look at some of the NH chain balers.

Yes JD's 2nd attempt for manufacturing rd balers with models 410/510 was a little better than the 500 but still no where as good as later open throat models

And you won't with a 510. Hay must completely dry with a 510 and the belts must be good. Interesting baler to bale with, in dry hay I have baled windrows in 4th gear that I could barely get under my row crop 4020. Must be watched at all times you need eyes in the back of your head.

Dad had a JD round baler. Spent more time unplugging it than baling with it. I tried it with similar results. Think it was either a 510 or 530. It had that little roller in there by the belts and would roll hay around it and plug if it was not absolutely dry to straw. Then would have problems. So I stand by they go with scrap like pie and ice cream. Had 2 sizes of New Idea balers for the last 30 years with few problems and most of them were when it ran out of twine.

That would be the 510 which was only made from late 70s to the early 80s and that would put the age older then your NI balers. If you read any of the posts even the JD guys say they were junk. The 530 was a completely different baler and was much better and I would put it up against any NI you can throw at it. When you say all JD round balers should be scrapped based off of some of the first round balers JD put on the market just makes your post look dumb. Gee NI balers must be junk because I don't see any around here........

In the beginning of large round baler manufacture there were many brands that weren't very GOOD including JOHN DEERE models 500,10 & 410. Early Vermeer & IHC rd balers weren't much if any better. Yes these JD models had chay compression rollers that were very easy to plug especially if hay was damp. But if one isn't baling silage or sweat hay who needs to be baling damp hay that will mold.

IMHO & baling experience JD 30-60 series rd balers ""are in the very good class"" of rd balers

If you want a "real round baling(bundling) experience" try operating a Black Hawk model that rolled hay bundle on the ground. It had a nyd motor that required the hyd motor speed be slowed down when cornering or hay bundle would puked on tractor & operator.
