JD 5083E PTO kicks out

Has anyone had the PTO kick out suddenly when running? Ours started doing this today while mowing & the yellow knob was still in the "up" position.
It would run briefly when pulling the knob out again but after a minute or so it would stop again.

I was thinking the relay was overheating so we pulled it out & cleaned the contacts & checked for loose connections under the yellow knob/switch. Once back together the PTO ran fine for about 30 to 40 min. & then it cut out again.

Any suggestions? Thanks,

Gary

Theres also a sensor mounted back by the 3 point that reads PTO RPM, i think this lets the conputer know that it is spinning.

So is the seat switch supposed to shut off the PTO when you get out of the cab? If that's the case that function has never worked on this tractor.

Thanks for the replies gentlemen. Now we know where to start.

I only thought that it would be very likely that a tractor that new would have an “operator proximity switch” in the seat. I didn’t check the parts diagram but I would think your owners manual would tell you about it in the PTO operation section if it has one. It could have been disabled previously unless you are the original owner.

Ok thank you for that. I just gotta go through the PTO control parts y'all mentioned. Thanks again.

The earlier E series the PTO would not stop if you got out of the seat, just sound and warning. I believe the PTO RPM sensor tells the computer that the PTO is turning and put RPM on the dash.

Thanks to all that wrote in; I may have found it though. The "purple" wire to the PTO solenoid had dried, cracked insulation leaving bare wire extending just over an inch from the solenoid. Probably shorting on & off against the metal. Once I cleaned & taped it up I ran it with no problem for 30 min. or so.

I appreciate all the help.
