JD 509 mower any good?

Wondering if anyone has info on this mower. From the little I have found online it seems to be a heavy duty mower. Not much info though. Is $750 a reasonable price in decent condition?

You will not find a 5' rotary cutter that is heavier built than a John Deere 509. Since it has been many years since they were discontinued (probably due to low demand because of their high price), you will want to check condition. They were nearly bullet-proof when new, but this made them very expensive, resulting in low demand. Like any older machine, check condition of key components. If it has set outside all of it's life and not been maintained, it could be junk.

I have a 609, and it is built tough. Bought it brand new in the mid 1990's and it cost $3500 back then to buy it. If the 509 is in good shape, I'd say that is a very good deal. I sold a 5ft woods brand that I got in a package deal of other equipment I wanted, and it was well used. Poor paint and a bent tail wheel, and blades were marginal at best. Had make offer, and first offer I got was $600. He owned a mower in very short order.

Had 2 709's, & its just a smaller version; built really heavy. JD stopped building them due to the size didn't suit most people; but the 609, & 709 have been around for about 35 years, & are still available new from the dealer. I have been thinking of another 709.
