I"m trying to trouble shoot the problems on a Jonh Deere 510 backhoe/loader. Serial # 260252T, it will grind when trying to put it into gear. I know this tractor has a transmission filter and no one knows when the last time is that it has been replaced.
Obviously the first thing wouldbe a fresh filter and fluid. What is step 2?
This tractor is at my gun club and I told them I knew of a great bunch of guys that could probably help out. I do not have a parts manual for the tractor, just a simple owners manual type thing that does not offer much info. If anyone has a spare laying around they will sell let me know.

Parts catalog can be viewed at JDparts.com. It appears the 510 has a hyd controlled clutch so I think changing hyd filters and cleaning sump screen will be in order. If that didn't correct it then I'd suggest checking trans pump pressure.

I'm thinking it has a sychro range transmission, with a dry clutch, if the gears are raking,if this is what it has then the clutch could be dragging or the sychronizers are bad , ether way splitting it is in the picture, and that is "not' an easy job on a 510...

My knowledge of ind JD tractors is very limited.

The foot clutch pedal is connected to this hyd housing
HOUSING 1 (MARKED R41152) (SUB FOR AR45381) (MARKED R41151 OR R44164) (ALSO ORDER 15H558 PIPE PLUG) (SUB AR88040)

Also this is shown
TRANSMISSION FRONT CLUTCH PACK
(POWER SHIFT)

I think they offered a power shift and a sychro range version on the 510, since he stated the gears were clashing I'm thinking he has a sychro range, much like the 3020 version, which is what powered the old 510's.
