JD 520 transmission

I went to check all of the fluids in the 520 before plowing. Noticed the trans fluid was milky, obviously had water in it. So I drained it and 2 teeth fell out. Pulled the trans cover off last night. Found 2 gears that have damage. I believe they are on the countershaft. It's the one at the bottom. So I need to break it down to get inside the trans now. My question is do I need to pull both sides apart? The clutch and the flywheel? Or can I just pull the flywheel side apart? I pulled apart a JD A about 7-8 years ago not sure how much different this one will be. I don't have a service manual for the 520. Thanks!

It will be very similar to the A. Both sides will have to come off and darn near everything has to come out to get to that countershaft. While down there I would go ahead and pull the pto bevel gears and inspect the bushings for it too.

While in there check the bolts that hold the shift lever in place. Starting with the "50" the bolts were locked with metal tabs and sometimes they were not bent properly allowing the bolts to back out and fall in the gears. If any of the bolts are missing check for the remains while in there.
