JD 530 pos or neg ground?

Hi, recently bought a 530 that's been sitting for a few years. It does not have a battery in it and I am looking for suggestions on how to figure out if it is positive or negative ground? Also, if it is 6v or 12v? It has an alternator on it. I'm thinking it would be 12v neg. ground but want to be sure. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Reviewed the information on TractorData.com for the John Deere 530 and under the [b:654c4848f0]Electrical[/b:654c4848f0] section it indicates that it has a positive ground.

Take a look at the diagram below.

Note the two 6 volt batteries.

The diagram above shows a generator.

Take a look at the illustration below.

Hope this helps.

Your "thinking" is likely correct

ALLLLLLLLLLLLLL two Cylinder Deeres were originally POSITIVE GROUND, but if it was converted to an alternator ITS MOST LIKELY NOW NEGATIVE GROUND unless it had a special built alternator.

When converting to NEG ground the ammeter leads need swapped and the coil leads need reversed so - now goes to distributor instead of + and of course, battery NEG to frame ground

Hooking up a battery with positive ground to an alternator will fry the diodes in the alternator.

Yes JD's originally came with generators. Yet it is your tractor. If you are happy with a 12 volt alternator I am happy for you. Dont let some one poo poo you because you run a alternator on your tractor.

If the tractor is equipped with a fuel gauge as most of the later ones were, it is now toast because they were designed for 12 volt positive ground only.
