JD-60 Shifter Problems.

I think that the snap ring on the bottom of the shifter on a JD-60 came off. The shifter is really loose and I can't tell what gear I'm in. What is the easiest way to disassemble the top of the transmission so I can get the shifter out and fix it? I really don't want to disassemble the whole tractor. If any one has had experience in this area I would appreciate hearing from you. The transmission was working fine until the snap ring came off. Thanks.

pull the shift cover, make sure the half ball and the spring on the bottom side are still on the shifter rod, if so, clean the snap ring groove and install a new snap ring. in some cases, rust has done away with the snap ring groove, install a new one anyway, and put a small hose clamp below it.

The cup that the ball pivots in wears out and then the whole ball picks up and down with the shift lever. New cups are available from deere.
