JD 60 starting

I just purchased a used 60. I was told that because of the engine pressure is turned over hard,,,,,sort of like a run down battery. Even with a new battery it turns the same. I also know that there is a 12 volt battery used that is hooked up backwards......pos. to neg...ect. The tractor ran out of fuel, now it won't fire.......I am lost as to what to do ....any suggestions would be appreciated///

most likely it is changed over to negative ground try charging the battery and hooking it back up.

Do you have another tractor available? When I have one with problems starting, I always run a flat belt from pulley to pulley to make them go. By turning it over with the belt, you can tinker with the carb, check for spark (flywheel side) and etc. Remember to put one twist in the belt to get correct engine rotation. Good luck.

If the engine turns free then the starter may be dragging from worn out bushings.

Steve, it came original from the factory wired "backwards" as you call it, its battery was Positive grounded i.e. + post to frame ground with - to starter. If the battery is good Id remove n clean n wire brush n reatatch each n every battery n starter n ground cable connection n try it again, maybe give the batery a good charge first just in case. If she still cranks slow and all the cables n connections are good and the switch is okay, the starter may simply be weak due to worn bushings or brushes etc.

A 60 wouldn't come with them.

CLW, was all ready to argue with you about the 60 having petcocks because the 60 I own does have them. Looked at the parts manual and owners manual and low and behold, no mention of them.I think my 60 either has a block from a late A or is it possible that someone added them? Bill M.

bill, CLW....I have a 1954 60 and it came from the factory with petcocks on the bottom of the block
