JD 606 Rotary Cutter

I need a new driveline shear bolt for my JD 606 brush hog. The JD part is 19H1901. This is a 5/16 x 2 inch bolt. The Weingartz dealership website shows as an alternate a 5/16 grade 8 bolt can be used. This is what it shows: Hardware 5/16-18 X 2 Gr8 Hhcs Znyl 98023. It is surprising to me that they are indicating a grade 8 bolt for a shear bolt. I thought shear bolts were generally grade 5 or grade 2. It's also surprising to me that it is only 5/16. I thought most Brush hog driveline shear bolts were 1/2 inch.

Multiple online references say it's Grade 5. They're correct part is $1.62 from Deere. Probably best to buy one (not your dealer's substitute) and find out. If your dealer's substitute is wrong, the penalty is you buy more parts from them.

Yes, I'm planning to buy the original from Deere. It's just surprising they are recommending a Grade 8 as an alternate.

From the 506 & 606 Rotary cutter Operator's manual # OMW35179

That bolt is on a longer lever than the setup that just goes through the shaft so sees less torque.

Are they recommending it based on a bulletin for the mower, or because that is what they have in stock? The Operator's manual info I posted for you shows grade 5, available about anywhere.

I'm not sure. I did a google search for JD 606 shear bolt and the Weingartz JD dealership was at the top of the list. On their website they listed the bolt with the JD part number and down below that, listed the grade 8 bolt as an alternate part. Weingartz is not local to me. I went to my local dealer yesterday afternoon and bought the JD bolts. Frankly, they look exactly like a 5/16x2" bolt from the local hardware store. I was expecting a definitively longer shank on the JD bolts, like on a NH square baler shear bolt, but that wasn't the case.

Here's the link to the Weingartz part showing the alternate bolt down below the JD part number.

I expect that is a general marketing statement. That 5/16 x 2 capscrew is likely used in a number of applications, not just your shear clutch. Grade 8 could be an acceptable alternate for many applications but might not be so good for your application. If it was, I would expect to find that alternate in the Operator's manual. JMHO
