JD 630 Starting problems

The starter on my 630 has consistantly gotten worse, to point now that it takes about 20 minutes to start. The starter engages, but then kicks back out. I took the starter in and was told it was working fine, the problem must be in the switch or battery. I put in a new switch, still does it. Haven't changed the battery yet, but it is not that old. Has anyone encountered this before?

check grounding I had one like that put a ground wire on the stsrter and someplace on the tractor working now .That maynot be the fix on your

Get yourself a new starter repair man.

Not sure what you mean by "kicking out."

If the starter stops working suddenly or intermmittently, it Has to be the solenoid.

If the starter continues running but not engaged on the flywheel, you may have a bad ring on the flywheel, a bad starter ORC, and/or it simply is not being "thrown" out onto the flywheel.

Having looked at it again, I see that it does not hold the ring gear. The drive gear comes out, engages, then it retracts. Sometimes it holds the ring gear but won't turn the tractor over. Sometimes it will turn over until it hits the compression stroke, then it disengages. The starter guy said that if the starter was not recieving adequate power due to a bad battery or switch, it would behave like this. I have replaced the switch, it still does it, though not as bad.
