Im not sure how to get the coils to cut the six volts down to 2 for the pony motor.

Ballast resistor. Coil voltage is closer to 5.0 volts however when running, full battery voltage while cranking.
If you run the F.I.T. coil protection circuit. A ballast resistor is not required.
