JD 70 Clutch

I am rebuilding the clutch and pulley on my 70 and now have it back together and trying to adjust the clutch but no matter what I do when I push the lever forward it will not snap in gear it just pushes forward to a dead stop. Could I have something wrong with the clutch dogs or something else with the pulley, I am sure I have the clutch disks and plates in properly. Thanks for your help

1. Did you put in new Dogs and Toggles?
2. How worn is the "drive pin" (back by the toggles)
3. Does the crankshaft have very much end play.

I did not replace the clutch dogs or toggles as I thought they looked fine, and did not have a problem with clutch before starting restoration, maybe a little slippage under heavy load, the drive pin was not worn, and I have the crank shaft end play set according to manual. Just seems like I am missing something simple.

If you didn't replace the dogs and toggles and it snapped in before you swapped the clutch material, then it seems it only can be that you did not get it tightened enough. Did you change the Clutch Drive Disc?

Doug,

It is easy to not get things assembled correctly when putting the clutch back together. My most common mistake is not putting the internals over the drive pins and just the pressure plat over the operating bolts.

to adjust: put the clutch lever in the engaged position and tighten the adjusting nuts evenly until just a little over finger tight. Start trying the clutch lever and finish adjusting from there. Hope this helps

Well I got the clutch figured out over the weekend, I had the fork in the wrong grove, I changed that and was able to adjust the clutch no problem. Thanks for the advise, I will try to post some pics of the 70 soon.
