JD 70 Engine Oil

I'm getting ready to change the engine oil in my 1953 JD 70. Any suggestions on which brand of oil to use or which weight? I have the manual, so I knew the factory specs for weight, but the engine is old, so it might be better protected using a heavier weight.

When I had mine rebuilt the owner of the machine shop recommended Rotella 15W-40, even though mine is spark ignition not diesel. He said that the oil that they have now far exceeds the specs that were recommended when these old warriers were built. I have had no problems with the Rotella whatsoever.

We use 15W-40 diesel oil in all four of our Model 70 tractors.

Agree with Hugh. Diesel engine oil has a better additive package. Car engine oil is formulated to keep emissions to a min. on short trips.

Thanks guys. My JD 70 is a gas burner also. "Instinct" was leading me toward 15w-40 diesel oil, but I wanted to see what others were doing first.
