JD 70 Pony Motor

I have a question about the valves seats in the pony motor for my John Deere 70 diesel. First off I don't know if it has ever been rebuilt or not. It does run excellent, but I am wondering that since it is a 54 model, should I run the lead additive in it or not. I have been told that on the older tractors if you don't have hardened seats, you really need to run the lead additive. Any info would be great.

Diesels, propane, natural gas and all fuel tractors all operate just fine without lead.
The starting engine doesn't get enough hours operating time to wear the valves and seats.
Just use clean premium non ethanol fuel, unleaded aviation fuel such as 94UL or 100UL would be best .100LL aviation fuel maybe all that can be found locally.Aviation fuel is noted for long shelf life and lack of varnish or gum.

My 720 D is a good example...

I lowered the "High RPM" a good deal (Maybe no more than 4,000 RPM) and it starts the Big engine just fine... I think it takes a lot of stress of the Pony motor...
I just let it warm up until the Pony is running smooth, then start the Big engine..
I find, the engagement is much smoother when I throttle-down the Pony to engage the Big engine, then throttle up..
