I bought a pto generator.how many rpm will give me a constant 540.does it have to be full throtle all the time?does the revoltion change with engine speed.

yes it will need to be full throttle. you will barely get 540 even then. owners manual probably tells you but i believe 536 @full throttle. yes of course it changes with engine speed it's derectly linked to the engine, just gears & shafts, with an extra clutch near the back for independent operation. w.o.t. can be tweaked slightly if need be to keep proper rpm for generators, just get a hand-held tach.

60Hz 540 rpm generator MUST be operated at full rated rpms at ALL times. It's not an irrigation pump.
Output frequency is rpm dependent. People have tried to save $$$ by running pto generators at reduced speed. Good intentions BUT it makes the electricity leak out of the wires.
A 70 diesel with 1125 rpm will run a pto generator smoother than the 975rpm gasser. At some part load levels, the generator may "hunt" and make the lights flicker. Just add of remove some electrical loads to avoid those resonant spots.
