JD 720 Tire Size Question

I have a 720D with 15.5 x 38 rear tires. I have to replace the tires and I was thinking of going to 13.8 x 38. Will the 13.8 tires fit on the same rim as the 15.5, or do I have to get different rims also? What is the advantage of having 15.5 vs 13.8?

1st off they don;t make 13.8 tires they are 13.6 . 15.5 tires use 14" rims and are to wide for 13.6 tires. 12" rims used on 13.6 tires. it would cost more to by the rims and tubes than to just stay with 15.5 tires

If its a working tractor stay with proper size. If its like some of mine and just sets in shed and you enjoy owing it, and you have the 13ts go for it. Will set lower as tires will spread out.

I'd go with 14.9 x 38" ; they will fit 14" rims,[assuming your 15.5's are on 14" rim]; 14.9's are a higher & I think better, side wall then 15.5's ; stay away from 13.6 , not enough tire for 720D....

There were many opions on the 720 starting with 12-4-38 threw 15-5-38.This came out of they john deere book. now the tire will or should tell you what size rim to use.

15.5 and 13.6 are about the same height, the 15.5 is kind of an oddball made to give width without adding height.

I think 13.6 is pretty narrow for a 720

These are 14.9 x 38 Titans.

I had 18.4 X 30 on my standard with 14" rims. I put wider rims on with new tires. Both sets looked good but the Michelins are soo much better than the good for a year.

To me it depends on what you plan to do with your tractor... I have a 730 dualed up with 16.9x38's that i do ground work with and love the set up. to me 13.6's look to small for the tractor

I am restoring a 730d myself, and I'm debating the finish tire size. Currently as purchased, it has 16.9-38s on 16" wheels. It looks really beefy, and I like the look. However, it is a flat top fender tractor, and the fenders are adjusted to the top. The tires are almost worn out and I do not believe new tires will clear the fenders with fresh trac bars. Therefore, I too am questioning what my final tire size will be.

The 13.6 is the same high profile that compared to the 15.5 tire for height. somebody can correct me but I think that the farmall 400 and the john deer 70 came out with 14.9 tire size. And the 450 and the 720 came out with the 15.5 option. to get the same test results as with the 13.6 tire but wider for flotation and traction they came up with the 15.5 width. So the 13.6 will give you the same height as 15.5 but will be narrower. I like the 13.6 better for cultivating because to narrow up my 720 with 15.5 makes it pretty tight between 30" rows. Its a lot better with my 630 with 13.6 tires. Just my experience. John

Question: Can you get fenders up high enough to run new 16.9-38s without hitting??
