JD 730 Thrust washer replacement

I'm getting ready to replace thrust washers on a 730 diesel. Has the original flywheel that is tight. Just looking for some insight on this job before I start it. Does the governor have to come off? I know the timing cover does but can I get to the inner thrust washer? Thanks

I done one a few years ago they are easy to do. I didn't remove the timing cover just have to take flywheel of and oil slinger cover. My cover was really stuck on gasket so I had to tap mount hole in cover to push it off. I use a little grease to hold thurst in place. Make sure you have a .003 feeler gauge to center up slinger around crank spline when reinstalling. It talks about this in the IT manual if you have one.

The inner one will be a major undertaking IIRC. I sure would not attempt it without the guidance from the JD service manual.
I have not done any where that was all I needed to do. As usual when opening up a 2cyl. diesel it is like opening up Pandora's box !

2cyl. diesels are a bottomless pit that you throw money into ...inter trust is a lot of work & like stated you need a service manual ....sell it & buy a LP pulls as much as diesel & smells a lot better

Thanks for the replies. I figured it was going to be about that much fun. I do have both the JD and IT service manuals. I haven't dug them out to look at anything yet. This is a new to me tractor and it has Probably been run this way for a long time if I was to guess and that's why I'm sure both thrust washers will need replacing. What else do you recommend replacing? And can it be done with leaving the govener on?

I'm thinking the book shows how to get the timing cover off and leave the gov. on. I remember seeing this years ago. I never thought too much of the idea as I thought it would surly be hard to seal it all up with spliced gaskets and such. I HATE oil leaks !
Many times a person can make there own short cuts to do repairs that manuals do not mention about. You just have to think them through.

The idler shaft, bearing and gear that drives the govenor requires a full and detailed examination .
It makes a bad sound when the bearing fails or the idler shaft wobbles in the bore drilled into the block.
