JD 7700 combine

Still looking for a small combine for my small acreage of grains and beans. Found a JD 7700 with a grain platform. seems to be in OK condition.

Anyone have any comments good machine, problems, things to look for etc?

Thanks

They do a good job cleaning up the grain

Can you give us more details like what engine, flat screen or no, hydro, belt drive, or post torque? For the most part they were good machine when new but they weren't as good as the 20 series in the durability department. They have a few stupid things like the bicycle chain
cylinder speed adjustment. It would be nice if the owner would let you run the separator just to check to see if anything is vibrating out of normal. Check to make sure the primary countershaft and the belt are in good shape with no flat or burned off spots. Working on those
is almost a death sentence anymore because they are such a PITA to work on.

I guess its all what you are used too. They were only a mid size machine when they were new. The 8820 that came out in the next series made them look half again smaller in both size and capacity. And todays combines make them look like plot machines. I have a 76' model that I play around with occasionally.

The poster has posted before asking about a small combine for a few acres. There's been a couple posters lately doing that and they keep drifting toward way more machine than they'll ever need.

I have a gleaner E, gasser open platform, that is doing a passable job but want to add small plots of beans or other crops
that in my area are usually cut and windrowed to harvest (clover, garbanzos etc) so was thinking of having a grain header
and a pick up header to accomplish this. Want a diesel with enclosed cab as well. Would like a header less than 16 ft
wide. I am just looking at what is coming up for sale in my area.

What size and models would you suggest for this?

Thanks

The 7700 was a big machine back in the day. They could eat the grain. My only complaint was that series was a pill to grease and
service particularly dealing with the main and countershaft and having to take that seat out to grease. They were very dependable.

Mine has a grease line to so i can grease everything from the ground. I never thought it was to hard to work on but i dont really have to work on it . You want to run it and make sure the primary countershaft isnt bent

760 Massey. Yes we had one. 60” cylinder and 71”separator along with a high inertia cylinder. Not my favorite combine by any means but they did have the capacity and a 760 would run a 7700 right into the ground. In fact a 750 would run with a 7700. JD didn’t have a combined that could compete with the 760 until the 8820.

7700 is a big combine. Good one,but big.The biggest one of it's day.You would be better served with
something smaller. 4400;6600;55;95....Doesnt have to be a Jd,there are lots of good older smaller
combines uot there.Keep looking.

Ran a 7700 for a lot of years, also a 4400 and 6600. With the 7700 you won't worry about overloading the return, plugging the feeder house and all the other problems that go with small combines. It will let
you harvest crops with weeds and in tough conditions. Manuevers as well as the small models, and easier to work on because there is more room to move around under. The grain pan under the concave will be
thin if it has not been replaced. You can shoe horn in a piece of plywood and with some spray foom get you buy if you don't want to replace. Good old simple combine.

7720 with hyro will go just about any place you can walk for wet. None of the smaller ones will even come close to that if it is wet fall combining. I have been mudding out crops for the last 5 falls. The F2 and those smaller machines will go and then be stuck so you have to pull them out each time. I have only had to pull the 7720 out once in all those years.
