JD 790 parking brake

Parking brake no longer works. I notice the plate that holds the brake on is worn on the end. Would this be called the parking brake pawl?

A couple questions. Does it get worn like this from pulling the parking brake handle while depressing the brake pedal? And also, has anyone tried to file new detents in this piece instead of replacing it?

Im assuming the brake pedal would have to be pressed much farther in to use the detents down lower on the piece.

Yes that looks like the part. Thanks

Any idea why its worn like?

And also, Im trying to fix this for someone who doesnt want to spend any money on it. He wants to try and adjust it to where the brake grabs lower on the lever where the teeth are still good. I think the whole brake pedal would have to be adjusted down for that to be possible. I dont think thats a good idea.

The tractor has just over 1,000 hours on it, and the brakes are probably still pretty good. It hasnt been used hard at all.

Also do you think filing new notches in the lever is a waste of time, or might that extend the life of the part some?

Personally, I'd sure try something. Maybe even weld it back up some a cut new notches in it.

I might try to cut new notches in it. My concern with this tractor is its used at a small marina. Its parked close to the water sometimes, with only the parking brake keeping it from rolling in. Id like to cut some deeper notches in it or something. For a little more security.

Not your tractor, so you don't control the operation of it and it is used in a public setting. If you are going to do the repair this sounds like a case of get and install the correct factory parts, see that they work correctly, [u:a18b497754]OR[/u:a18b497754] don't be involved in the repair at all. Enough can happen if you install the factory parts correctly. If the factory parts are there, installed correctly, and fail; you have some protection. If you modify the old parts, the brake fails, and someone is hurt because of the brake failure; a good lawyer will have you liable in no time flat once the owner says you fixed it for him. Not saying its right or wrong, just the facts.
