JD 820/830 Governor

Does anybody have any experience tuning up a governor on one of these tractors? Fuel pumps are turned up all the way and it is getting lots of fuel, but on the track and on the dyno the gov is lazy. Seems to take about a 300 rpm drop before the gov opens things up.

I do not want to run more RPM's, just maybe get the gov to react within 100 RPM's.

Thanks for any help.

The factory service manual covers setting up the linkage pre-load. Did it not improve after following the factory directions?

Have you made sure all the "slop" is out all the linkages. Any loss in governor arm movement is a loss in RPM.

Not exactly sure about what you are saying..

300 RPM between "High Idle" and "Under load" would be about normal..
Why not increase RPM 300..??

Ron..

Ron, the rules where we pull up here have an RPM limit and I can not go up another 300. Would like to see the gov go wide open/full fuel with only a 100 - 150 RPM drop from high idle. As to everyone else, thanks for the reply, I will chech all adjustments and linkages again, but what I was looking for, was a mod to speed up the response time if there is one. Wondering if there are any gov "tricks" for this model.

Now I have gone through the service manual and parts manual in detail. The only pre load adjustment is tension and pounds of pull on the throttle lever. Not going to do much for anything to do with the gov. And as for linkages, there isn't much between the gov and the fuel pumps. Only play could be with the weights on their pivot pins.

I think I need to work with the position of the weights in relationship to the position of the rack.

I think you are doing the right thing getting the govenor to stay "with" the engine .Roger Marlin says that is key to the 2 cyl diesels performing the best.

I kind of hate to give away secrets, but try extra weight on the linkage, Do you remember a 95 JD combine with a 2 bbl carb, they had a counter weight on the throttle linkage. Sometimes even a little binding of the linkage works, You push the throttle up real slow to check it, but when you pull you slam it up! On You Tube, Put in JohnDeere 435 @ Tunica and listen to it There is two videos in the 3500 it takes it a while to settle down.
