My son-in-law keeps picking up cool stuff and I get to do all the web searching for it. He’s got this Windrower and is replacing the hydraulic fluid. The stuff seems to be two thin.

He got Harvest King Trans-hydraulic oil for John Deere applications.

what should he get?

I’ve read that 10W motor oil works?

From the Operator's Manual OME55180...

AFAIK, Deere hasn't sold the "303" oil for MANY years, leaving you with Hy-GARD..

Hello Brad welcome to YT! What makes you say it is to thin? If it works you’re good to go. If it leaks somewhere and you think that is because the fluid is to thin and leaks because of that you are barking up the wrong tree. Seals or hoses need replacing to repair the leaks.

wore out is right, John Deere type 303 Special Purpose Oil, went away when the Endangered Species Act was passed about 1974 as Sperm whale oil was an ingredient in 303, and could no longer be obtained. Oils advertised as 303 currently are basically junk and there have been lawsuits and bans on the sale of such in a number of places. Hy Gard is the replacement and is backwards compatible for use where 303 was called for. The current JD spec to look for in a UTHF claiming to be for use in John Deere Equipment is J20C.

If the Harvest King UTHF says it meets the J20C spec on its label or product data sheet it should be satisfactory to use. I think their Premium grade meets that spec, but suggest one confirms that on the product they purchased, for themselves.

I think 10W falls in the 20 to 30 ISO range. Regular Hy Gard is in the ISO range between 46 and 68 (Low Viscosity Hy Gard is in the ISO 32 range). The recommended Hy Gard is thicker than the 10W you asked about.

As noted, leaks are much more likely caused by worn/damaged seals, gaskets, and hoses than thin oil.

If he doesn't have the Operator's Manual, he/you can download and save a free pdf copy from the JD Ag & Turf Bookstore. Use the Equipment Publication button to do a model search for 830.

I couldn't find the manual there by the machine model number, HOWEVER if you find the manual number elsewhere (OME55180) and search the DEERE site with it, it comes up.

Jim. I was making an attempt to find the operators manual for the guy with the JD 200 stack wagon on T&FT. After scrolling through the better part of 54 pages of results for “200” I gave up. If you have some free time :D maybe you would like to give it a shot.
1. Find a "200 Stackwagon" manual for sale on the 'net and note it's DEERE publication #, in this case, OMN159362.

2. Go to the DEERE manuals site, select "Part #/ Keywords and enter "OMN159362".

The manual comes right up and can be downloaded for free.

The 1971-1979 830 had single drive wheels with either the auger or draper platform. The 1970-1979 800 had duals and only a draper platform . I can not find the list of header widths available . Seen an 11ft which I had never heard of . seen 10,12 and 15 ft units .

I plugged 200 in as the model and got a dropdown list. I clicked on 200 in the dropdown list and got 4 pages of choices (34). There are 3 options by serial number ranges for operator's manuals. OMN 159362 for 0 to 3370, OMN159411 for 3371 to 4005, and 0MN159506 for 4006 and after. All three serial number ranges use the Technical Manual TM1110 and Parts Catalog PC1456.

I went back and asked why too thin, answer was it leaks! Kids, had he told me that I would have said Seals - no I’m not a mechanic but my dad was, kinda and I’m old enough to know things.

Thanks!

I had an 830 with 10' auger header with a conditioner for cutting hay. I also had a 16' auger head with 6 bat reel for peppermint....James
