JD 850 compact clutch adjustment

What issue are you having?

There's a turnbuckle in the clutch rod from the pedal lever to the lever on the clutch shaft in the flywheel housing, adjust that to give an inch and a half to two inches of pedal free travel and all should be well.

You can download and save a free copy of the Operator's manual from the John Deere Ag and Turf Bookstore. Here is a link to it. Go to Equipment Publications and search 850. Pick 850 from the drop-down list and when that list appears use your tractor serial number chose the one for your tractor (there are three 850 tractor choices).

Turnbuckle with locknuts is the adjustment location, as wore out posted. The manual I looked at shows do not run with less an 1/2'' pedal free play, adjust when free play is 5/8'' or less, and to adjust the free play to 3/4''. Best you check out the correct operator's manual for the serial number tractor you have.

Neighbor has a 850 with no clutch
freeplay, and will slip under a heavy
load. I thought this is not right. Clutch
seems to have 2 stages, is that correct?

A slipping clutch with no freeplay is not right. It could be a single or a two stage clutch, depending on the tractor the parts books show both. Download and read the correct Operator's Manual for his tractor serial number, it will have the right information. Adjust the linkage to get the correct pedal free play and see how it acts.

When I go to the JD link it offeres me to buy a manual for the 850 compact tractor, not a on-line readable one
Is this correct?

The Operator's Manuals can be downloaded for FREE (.pdf format), but NOT the Parts and Service Manuals.

There's a bit of a ''learning curve'' but once you figure out to click the ''Download Arrow'' the .pdf file should download.

It's there, I was on the site and looked. A lot of times on the older equipment you have to look at the latest or higher serial number model. In this case of the 3 listed it is the last that you can read on line. That being said, there is nothing in the manual on adjustment ot the clutch, and yes it is a 2 stage clutch.

They don't have the View Only option for all machines. I think the Download option is there for all. Below is a picture with the icons described for you. You can use the download icon to get the Operator manual to your device and read it at no cost. They do charge for downloads of the technical manuals and parts catalogs.

The info is there. They are not all two stage clutches. The tractor serial number is important as to clutch type/function, and actually trying it. It does appear the clutch free play adjustment (set to 3/4'', adjust if less than 5/8'') appears the same on all three from reading the manuals. Clutch pedal free play adjustments are on the following pages of the 3 Operator's manuals.

Serial number 0-9000: Single stage clutch from PTO operation description adjustment of pedal free play is on page 57.

Serial number 9001-16000: Single stage clutch, (transmission PTO) from PTO operation description, adjustment of pedal free play is on page 71.

Serial number 16001 and after: Two stage from Transmission and PTO operation descriptions, adjustment of pedal free play is on page 90-3.

Adjustment of the PTO part of the clutch would be in the Technical Manual as that is not an adjustment most owner/operators would do. Clutch pedal free play adjustment is a common owner/operator adjustment.
