Buddy of mine has an 850 diesel with fel. Today he lost the 3 point and loader operation ....he added 5 gal of hyd fluid and of course that means it was empty or close to it. So what's broken and where do we start? Is the hydraulic pump shot? Is there such a thing as losing the prime? Grasping g at straws here. Tractor is used and abused. Feeds large bales that I'm sure exceed the little tractors capability but its all he currently has.

Where did the transmission fluid/hydraulic oil go? Did he run it without oil? Do the hydraulics work now that he's brought it back up to full? Be sure to use specified oil or equivalent, not just any old transmission oil.

Parts catalog show a hyd filter(FIPS) RE27284 Filter - FILTER, ELEMENT, OIL ADD 26.47 USD and a trans sump screen(parts key 30) that probably needs cleaned or replaced.
CH19172 Strainer - STRAINER, OIL ADD 62.95 USD

He was using it when it quit working. I know he used hydraulic fluid and not transmission fluid. I doubt that the filter has ever been changed and for sure he must have a leak that at least over time has allowed 5 gallons of fluid to escape.

i have a john deere 850 tractor. the 3/4...7/8 cluster is shot. part num. CH12427. new or used would do. ive looked every where i can think of. Id even buy a junked out 850. the tractor is done without this part. please help.......

If it's an earlier SN 850, then I'm seeing the screen/filter that is accessible by removing the cover near the PTO at the back of the differential housing as being TY9425E. Then too, if the earlier SN 850 had power steering there's a canister screw on type filter too, CH11309. As TX Jim suggests, replace them whatever the number. Wish he'd totally drained the oil out before refilling. Costs something, but still wouldn't be a bad ides. It must be drained anyway to change that TY9425E. Also, I'm pretty sure that same gear cluster would have been used in tractors with the Yanmar name on them. They wouldn't have been sold new in the US but with the grey-market tractors now coming in, a salvage yard might have one.

So it sounds like most agree to change all filters and refill. Give it a try----and then find a new/used pump? Worth a shot with the filter change though.
