JD A 2spd.trans.

Hello, from Mn.,question-a John Deere A I am looking at has a high -low tranny it does not work in high in reverse he said it was designed that way from the factory, any truth to this?

It has a safety feature built in that shoves it out of high range when shifting into reverse. Sometimes this rod is broken or removed you could have high speed reverse. Ron Mn.

The reverse is plenty fast (almost too fast) on the low side. Would be quite a ride on the high side.

Yep the high is set up that way and is just how it is suppose to be. My 1935 JD-B is the same way and has been since it was new. Its even in the owners manual which I also have which is also the one that came with it as in its not a reprint but its also a 1935 manual

When I was a kid, we had a 37 B, and the lockout was either broken or taken out, before we got it. The only way you could use high reverse was in a big open field.
