JD A hood removal

I want to remove the hood on my A. It looks like I have to remove the steering shaft to do so. Any suggestions on the best way to do this? It looks like the only way to do it is from the steering pedestal. I appreciate any suggestions.

Easy job to do. At top of steering pedestal post remove the two bolts and small cap. This will show the spiral gear on end of steering shaft. Having already removed steering wheel being held by one big nut, slide steering shaft forward out of the steering gear housing. you now have steering shaft out with spiral gear on end. Install small cap back onto pedestal with cone bearing loose off the steering shaft kept inside to not loose. Assemble in reverse.

I just went through this. There is a cap in the front of the tractor at the end of the shaft and you have to take that off and then spin the shaft out, leave the wheel on to get it started. Also be careful and make sure you uncouple the any control rods going through. You will also have to remove to bracket for the choke rod. I think the throttle rod has to come off as well.

If the steering shaft is crusty (lumps of rust with layers of brushed on paint ect.) use a 1 ft. strip of plumbers tape to remove any sharp edged bumps where you can get to the shaft. Also do not forget to remove the woodruff key and place it back on the shaft and hold it on with a piece of plastic tape so you do not loose it. Plumbers tape can be bought at any heating and air conditioning store/supply, many uses on old equipment.

Be very careful with those bearings when you put the shaft back in the tractor. You can ruin them very easily. I use wheel bearing grease to hold the bearings in the races.
