JD A making engine oil

Hello! I have a 52' A and it is transfering oil from I assume the rear and over filling the engine crankcase, what is the likely culprit?

I think there is a copper bushing/seal at the PTO that if worn allows gear oil to seep into the crankcase or the other way round???? My cousin had this problem with a 48 B.

The crankcase and the tranny case portion of the main case are separated. I guess you might get a little oil passed through the first reduction gear cover.

But I think it is more likely that you are either leaking fuel into the oil through the cylinders (carburetor float needle valve leaking while you are shut down) or you are leaking coolant. You might try draining your oil and see what"s really in there.

Thanks for the reply! I should have been more specific; the differential seems to lose oil and the engine crankcase gains it. I have drained it down and it smells like gear oil. In the past I have drained as much as a gallon out.This is over a good period of time though.

Then your seal on the input shaft to the transmission is bad and need replaced. It's behind the very large 1st reduction gear that is driven by the clutch gear on the right side inside that huge removable cover. Engine oil is in there, it is returned to the engine by the large gear turning thru it and dropping it off under the clutch to the return hole just under the crank. Take the clutch off, the cover off, take that large gear off and replace the seal and perhaps bad bearing right there on that input shaft to your transmission. The oils then should stay separate.

There is no connection to the engine oil via the PTO shaft. A separate issue exists when gear oil gets into the power-trol oil and that is a seal on the PTO shaft. I believe that is a different issue than what you are talking about.

The parts list doesn't show a seal behind the reduction gear, although it would make sense the transfer could be in that area.
