Have a 1948 John Deere A that starts good
and will begin to run good but starts to
miss and almost quits then starts to run
good again then starts to miss almost quits
then runs good again. Checked gas flow to
carb which is good. Wheres best place to
start?

Points, condenser, spark plugs, how old are your plug wires. Are you getting a good solid spark. After checking those things then maybe look at the coil.

I just had the same thing...checked gas...float...rebuild carb....finally replace the "brand new" condenser with an old one I had and she is running smooth now....I'd start there; easy to test.

I have a 48 A that was doing the exact same thing. Tried new condensor, even bought a new rebuilt carb after I had cleaned and rebuilt the one that came on it. Kept thinking it wasn't a fuel issue as every time I checked to see if there was gas in the sediment bowl-there was, but it had set for a long time and got rust in the fuel tank. Every so often a flake or two of rust would float over the drain in the tank and choke the gas off. The tractor coughs and sputters, then dies. Then it sits for a bit, refills the carb back up and fires right up. I put a welding magnet about 6-8" away from the tank drain on the bottom of the fuel tank for a test and it solved the problem. Now, when some of that loose rust is swishing around in the tank, it gets pulled over to the magnet and stays put. I had the exact same thing happen to me on a 70 about 5 years ago and still have the magnet stuck to the bottom of the tank. I'm going to pull the A's tank this winter and clean it/seal it and fix the problem permanently. But like I said earlier-I thought for sure I was getting fuel to the carb as the bowl always appeared to be full, but it was an optical illusion. Pat in Montana
