What is the best way to clean the out side of a carb? Will a small sandbaster work or will it eat up the brass? What do you put on carb. for a clear finish?

What kind of carb is it? Is it a cast iron one?

If its a brass ensign carb, I have put them in solvent like varsol for a week and then take it out and wash in hot water. After assembly you can clearcoat it.

I did a cast iron one, after i had boiled it all out I got it dry and ran the housing on my wire wheel. When it was all apart I masked the inside and painted the cast housing. It turned out pretty good. I have seen them where a person will rebuild the carb and just hog a bunch of paint over the carb, those never tun out that good. If you are looking for a cast color check out www.Eastwood.com they have some paints that will work good.
