on my 290 planter, there is these little chains that go between gears. Ay one end a little peice of steel curves around the next link. Anyone know how to open these little *#%&$&@?

Can't picture what those used ? is it a flat links of chain like on a manure spreader ? if so you hold the one link bend it so the slot lines up with the one next to it and drive it off sideways. It is like spring steel so it pops open and closed. They make a special cast iron tool with a handle on it to hold these. It has spots for I think 3 different sizes.

Sounds like steel detatchable chain. Do as Mike M says, You gotta line up the slots and pound it apart form the side. If you've got small anvil or railroad tie or something else solid to drive against it makes it go a lot easier.

We called that thing a chain detacher. I think most of the farmers got theirs when they got a corn snapper. I have two of 'em. I got a chain breaker too,but that's used for roller chain.
