Hi guys-just bought a John Deere L?Maybe. This is what I know so far.It has 750 X 24 press steel wheels, has a high seat,Has the John Deere engine.Has the 1/4 inch steel wall pipe frame. On the top of transmission is a tag saying G008254,on rear axle is stamped AL2092D,on transmission is C11-15-2.Of course the serial tag is gone.Any one have a idea what I got?THANKS

I'm no L historian or expert - but I've had a few and worked as a Deere mechanic for a long time.
As I recall - the L has the Hercules engine with no Deere influence - it's basically half a four-cylinder engine. The LA used Deere's version - built as almost a copy of the Hercules with improvements. Still a flathead - no overhead valves. LIs - I think - had double-wall tube-frames instead of single wall.

Double check the tire size. If they are pressed steel they are probably 22 inch which would be correct for and L or LI. The LA has 24 inch tires with a cast center and detachable rim held on by 4 bolts. The later L's, LI's and LA's all had JD engines. I have a 40 L with Hercules but the 41 LI has JD engine. The tube walled frame is also typical of L or LI although some LA's have a thick walled tube most have solid tubes.

I'll try to help. The model was built with both the hercules motor and the John Deere motor. From 1938 to 1941 the Hercules motor was used. Beginning in 1942 the John deere motor was used. The Deere motor had a one peice casting for both the block and clutch housing. Hercules was two piece. See what you have. The LA has a PTO the L does not.

PTO's were any extreamly rare option and should fit both L and LA if you have one they are worth as much as the tractor.

Doesn"t L"s front end have a cast front end and one have the LA have sheet metal and if a cast nose if the JD is stamped it is a 62?

Also I believe somewhere I have read that the s/n may be stamped on the transmission of the L's but not the LA. I can't find that reference now but the stamp on your transmission would be similiar to a LA s/n which isn't suppose to be on the LA, Confused.
