JD LA 110 oil filter

Had a family member give my oldest son his
riding mower. It's a JD LA 110 model with
the 19.5 hp Briggs & Stratton engine in
it. This person was trying to change the
oil and oil filer on it, but could not get
the filter to screw off so it got cut off
with a saw. Being he has severe visual
issues, the end of the threads that hold
the oil filter on got cut off. How can
this be fixed ? There is not enough thread
left to start a new filer on. Otherwise
the rest of the machine is in good
condition. Suggestions please ??

If you could get a filter on I don't think it will ever seal. That is totally butchered

That's a mess!

Having access to the proper machines, I could fix it, but would require tearing the engine down.

But a farmer fix would be to drill and tap the holes to the biggest taper pipe size that would go in without splitting, screw in adaptors and make a bypass loop with small hydraulic hose.

Be sure to dip the drill bit and tap in grease to catch the chips, vacuum out what gets missed

File the threaded part flush to the sealing surface, Push in a tube the center to contain the oil pressure. Bolt a 1" thick or so spacer to cover up the mess. You can buy different filter nipples to tap into the other side.

Hood clearance for all this?
Open engine to do it right?
Leaks around the original sealing surface?

Or just make a cap and skip the filter all together. Worked for years on earlier stuff.

store it in the corner and wait for a another mower to surface with other problems and combine the two.

These are the type of repairs that I get in, some one attempts to repair, screws it up and then expects that I can repair it inexpensively.

I like 6clpowers last idea. Get the cut off threaded nipple pulled out and P&A. Plug and abandon. Go filterless and change oil often. Hey. Were talking about a free mower here. Not working on Vette Z06. Wingnut

Thanks everyone for the ideas. I know this mower won't see severe extensive use, so was kinda looking for an easy way to get by with it till it was time to do an engine swap in it. Son hasn't long turned 15, but loves taking something like this and wrenching on it to make a nice useable machine out of it. Some of the projects he starts up tho I ask myself how in the world did I get in the middle of a mess to clean up. Lol.

You can get a used crankcase half on ebay for between $30 and $70 shipped.

Briggs 697188, replaced by 592849.

Steve at Advance is right on.

The proper repair is to replace that sump. The face where the seal goes is all marred up. Even if you do fix the threads the filter screws up on, it is going to leak.

Then there is Steve's idea: Just tap both the center hole and the offset hole for 1/8 pipe fittings. Screw nipples on them and install a hose to loop from one to the other.

(Some of those just pump the oil through the filter and dump it back in the sump. I bet it still has the oil slinger on the governor assembly and it would probably live a long time like that.)
