have my dad's '44 JD LA, he bought it before I started to school, I'm 79 now. I've been cranking it with the hand crank. I had health problems (had a knee replacement) last year and couldn't start it, so now I decided to fix the cranking problem. I can get around pretty this year, I'll try to fix it right.

The problem is inside the starer. I run the battery cable straight to the post coming from inside the starter. It sparked but made no sound. So the starter needs to come out. This was my dad & mother's toy, they pained it, put decals on and played with it. I've never worked on this tractor other than working the garden. Went on line to how to pull JD LA starter, He said put a jack stand under it and take it loose. I don't think he & I are talking about the same tractor. It Looks to me it has to come out of the hole on left side (I don't know the length of it) or take the hood off.

I can crank it and move out my way for other things that needs tinkering with and fix it next month. Have a hog trap that needs straighten, caught one, made him very mad, he moved the trap 60 or 70 feet now the door has a bow that needs fixed. It don't slide in the guides very well.

You will need to remove the hood to get that starter out. Kind of a pain in the butt to remove the hood, you will want two people to lift it off the tractor. The gas tank is part of the hood so you might want to drain the gas out of it first. You will need to disconnect the fuel line from the sediment bowl and all the wires on the back side of the gauges. Once the hood is off it could not be any easier removing the starter.

If my memory is correct it should come out the round hole on the left side . Feel along the side facing out, their is one bolt that holds it in to the rear casting . With that bolt removed it should slide back and then turned to remove out the hole. Copy and paste to your browser the following to a video of your tractor with the with the hood/gas tank removed , clear view of the starter. If the starter is rusted in you may have to remove hood/ gas tank to aid in free it up.
