JD Loader question

Good Day All! Well, I purchased a 4020 awhile ago, and am considering mounting a 148 or 158 loader on it. I have the tee for the power, and can drill and tap the oil filter cover for the return. My questions are this: the 148 is mounted on a 4230, and the 158 is on a 4?40 (can't see the 2nd # in the pic.) so will the brackets fit the 4020, or is that not an option? I read through a few older posts, but didn't really see any specifics for my situation. Thanks as always, Jeff

I agree brackets will interchange.

If 4020 is below serial # 201,000 in lieu of drilling/tapping hyd filter cover I recommend returning FEL control valve to rockshaft return oil port which sends oil to hyd filter

I put a 148 on my Oliver 1550 that came off a 4020. I found the parts book online and it shows different mountings for row crop and utility models. The 158 is a longer reach at the booms.

Dumb question. Getting ready to mount and plumb my loader. When I do the T and elbow on the rockshaft return, do I need to drain the Hyd. oil first? Just trying to avoid an oil shower!
Thanks,
Jeff

I put a 158 on my 4020 when I had it years ago. Plumbed as you did, outlet of the control teed for controlled flow source and return to top of the filter canister. Fabricated a bracket to hole the controls within easy reach of the seat. Worked great.

I don't know if you have to drain it to install the rockshaft line T, but if the filter and sump screen haven't been serviced recently just go ahead and drain it and do a full service.

IMHO routing return oil to rockshaft return oil line which leads to hyd filter is far superior to routing return oil to ported hyd filter cover
Well Jim this was my first JD and I had an I and T manual but nothing else. I don't know where I got the idea to tap into the filter cover but I wasn't aware of any other spot to plug in. Thank goodness it worked for me. I did weld a fitting to the cover to accept the hose but I understand your potential flow limitations comment about using the filter cover.

Anyone know for sure if I should drain the system?
I think since rockshaft return port connects to hyd filter one can disconnect fitting without draining trans. Place nozzle of operating shop vacuum on hyd oil filler tube or cover filler tube with something tom help create a vacuum if oil escapes.

Mark I think attaching FEL control valve return hose to RS return oil fitting wasn't a very common practice way back when you owned a JD 4020.

Sorry. I just changed the fluid and filter. The loader was an afterthought after my current loader tractor sprung a hydraulic leak.
