JD M Generator issues

Still having problems with the generator on the 1950 M. It got to where sometimes it would charge but not great. Less than 8 amps wide open on high charge. I have cleaned all connections multiple times. Took apart generator and cleaned it. Brushes look ok and brush holder springs are good.

I took apart cutout relay and cleaned and adjusted to specs in book. Sometimes it still wont close and charge other times it will. Other times it shows discharge while running.

Yesterday I installed a solid state cutout relay. Now it does charge but at wide open throttle on high charge its no higer than before little less than 8 amps. Wide open throttle on
low charge it shows nothin on gauge. The 3rd brush is adjusted all the way with no change. I had the field grounded during the tests with a jumper wire with no change. No matter what the engine has to be wide open to get it to charge at all which isnt goin to work for me. What do yall think is wrong with it? I guess ill send it to be rebuilt soon.

After having similar troubles with getting the generator on my Super C to charge consistently I took the cover off the battery box just to find a nut laying on top the battery and the post clamp on the end of the negative cable totally loose. Sort of embarrassing. Glad it was hidden where others couldn't see it.

I have been through all connections many times. I even ran all new wires for the whole tractor and replaced battery cables. Its charging but not great. I don"t know if something is wrong with armature or field coils. I cleaned the commutator and the brushes look ok and are making good contact.
From what I have found on other sites this generator should make 10amps at WOT and on high charge. I need somebody to confirm what excactly this generator should be putting out.
I would like to keep the original genny but if I constantly have to keep the tractor wide open to charge I"m gonna have to change to something else.
Is the generator just tired or is this normal?

The genny is 13 amps max. About 15 to 20 minutes after a hard start up you should drop to about nothing (no reading on the guage) so I don't see why your battery isn't staying up. Sounds to me like the battery is a dud or you have a ground somewhere drawing current.

The voltage at battery isn"t getting past 6.2 even after running at wide open throttle for awhile on high charge with extra jumper wire grounding the field terminal. 3rd brush is adjusted to max.

If all else fails been thinking of finding a 12volt generator that would fit and putting that on it with a regulator.
