JD M removing axle

I have tried to remove the iron hub on my JD M but so far I have had no luck except to learn what does not work and accumulate some interesting new jacks.I have discovered that a 30 ton bottle jack can break almost anything you attach to it.

Question. Can I remove the axle from the final drive without taking the hub off first??(I am calling the hub the part that weighs about 90 lbs that the wheel attaches to) My goal is to remove the bull pinion shaft as i think it is broken where it enters the differential.

the stub axle can be removed with the hub. remove the inboard cover or planter drive and seal housing if installed(keep track of shims, this is what preloads your axle bearings) when you pull or tap the stub axle outboard, the inner washer/spacer and bull gear will drop into oil pan. also be very careful of falling hub and stub axle(hopefully you will have extra assistance). good luck, d. coleman(48M&51B)

if you have a engine hoist you can remove the housing from trans/differental by removing brake rod and four mounting nuts to check bull gear pinion shaft. good luck, d. coleman

If you saw where i am doing this work, you would laugh. I am on an island off the coast of Maine. No electric except by generator the only way to get there is by small boat. Needless to say no hoist etc. I really do appreciate your thoughts. I think that my next step is to remove the stub axle first. Your thoughts on removing the final drive however are good. I think If I have any trouble with the first option, I will try removing the final drive to look at the upper axle. again, thanks for your help. I think if I can remove the stub axle, I will take it to a Machine shop to have the hub removed from the axle so I can get the hub off in the future if I need to. Have you ever had to work on the final drive section on your M. they seem rugged, i cant figure out what I did to break the upper axle.

have had both housings compleatly disassembled, new seals, all internal parts cleaned and found one bearing race spun in housing(previous owner failed to shim properly)lucky i had a parts tractor. he had tried to stake race area with a center punch to hold race from turning. i guess you do what you have to do in a tight. good luck, d. coleman

yeah, we are about 35 miles north of freeport near Rockland and Camden. Beans is quite a different place now from years ago. we are on friendship island. We had to have the tractor brought out on a barge. That was a little tricky.

Thanks for the thoughts, I am going to try to pull the stub axle next weekend then the upper drive axle. I hope the break is the shaft where it enters the differential or the next step will have to be pulling out the differential that seems like a much bigger job. george
