The head is off the JD M. There is a slight scoring ,3 thou, on the head and block where the gasket damage is. Should I put a film of JB weld in that area. To plain the head the manifold must be removed. The bolts are seriously corroded. Removing would be difficult.

No free lunch on 70 yr old tractor,this is the perfect time to address the manifold and shave head. Work on the valves also.

As stated now is the time to correct & renew the 70+ years. Might was to try grinding off the heads of the bolts that
mounts the manifold to cylinder head. Start soaking these of maybe get lucky & the manifold will wiggle on the head. But
now is the time fix it. Replacement parts are not cheap & neither is doing it twice.

I agree - now is the time. I have had good luck removing studs out of M, 40, LA 2 cylinder JD blocks with a little heat and soaking them before removal.

I would say go through this as long as you have a local shop that can do the machining work for you if you cannot yourself.

Looks like the advise is to plain the head. So what is the best way to loosen the manifold bolts? The bolt heads are corroded bad enough that a six point socket slips. How much head to apply is safe before the manifold cracks.
Would it be wise to grind the bolt head off, work the manifold loose and then have the bolt stem to work with?

I don't know about where you live, but a local machine shop here will remove them for you.

I should have said USED to remove them for you, as I haven't been there for years.

Rocket Socket damaged and frozen bolt sockets are quite good at this type of situation to get the nuts off. If you have access to a welder I would then weld a new nut onto the studs. Then I would start with a breaker bar on the nut and if need be add a cheater pipe on the breaker bar.
