JD Powershift

I've always been involved with 2-cylinder John Deere's. Am interested in a 3020 with powershift, and I'm green in this area. Is the powershift a "shift on the go" transmission? I understand it has 4 reverse and 8 forward speeds. I currently have a Farmall 706 and it has TA problems. I don't want to get into another transmission fiasco.

Powershift transmissions ARE shift on the go. They work with wet clutches, and planetary gearsets. There is valving to make engagement smooth. The clutch pedal is also called an INCHING pedal, for tight maneuvers. IMHO very reliable. Like a T/A, things do wear out.

Deere Powershifts are so good Allisons bought a 4020 gasoline tractor and tried to build a better and cheaper powershift than the Deere. They gave up after a couple years or so.They couldn't do it. Dad worked at Allisons back then. They finally sold the 4020 by sealed bid.My bid of $4800 didn't get a smell. Tractor had over 2,000 hours on it with the new, unused powershift transmission when sold.

If they had regular oil changes with JD oil then they last forever. But bad oil, water in oil will tear them up faster than anything.
They are shift on the go,but there are some shift points that can shift a little rough and in cold weather they really drag you down. Some people love-em some don't care for them ? You will just have to drive one and decide for yourself. I perfer the syncro-range as it has a lot better park system for on hills and doesn't drag down in the cold.

I've had 5 of them, still have 4. All over 8000 hours, one over 11000. One had to get rebuilt in 1980, but was a plantation tractor with untold/unknown hours. Was both a field and loader tractor- lots of shifting. Other four have had no repairs at all. Change oil, keep the water out. IH means TA and rear end problems.

i think powershift 4020 is best thing since sliced bread. i used them on deere tractors from 4020 the 4630 i like the way they work.

they work really for mowing and baling hay anything on pto is good place for powershift.
i would like a 4020 diesel with wide front, dual hydraulics, 3 point, and powershift. i know i will cost a big dollar.
