JD R pup engine

Has anyone had an issue were the starter wont mesh up with the ring gear on the flywheel of the pup engine??? i took the flywheel off and the part number is R617 but theres a part number stamped in the ring gear which is R618. its like the ring gear is a 1/8 of an inch to high so the gear wont come across it.

If the pony engine was removed you have may have to add shims under the pony so the gears mesh. If the pony was not removed you may have bearing problems in the pony"s transmission or the pony"s main bearing may be bad. I had the latter problem on my 720.

the engine has been removed and put back on but that shouldnt affect how the starter bolts to the transmission which bolts to the engine. everything is in a set place so the only thing i can see is that the ring gear is the wrond size
