When JD first introduced those model of rd balers IIRC all earlier models were sent back to the factory to have those shields installed to help keep baler operators from putting their arms into operating balers to attempt to unplug when baler feeding got plugged up. Also balers were lowered closer to the ground to help control baler rollovers. The first 2 rollers plugged very easily on those models that compressed hay before hay entered bale chamber!!!!!!!!!!!

To my knowledge there was no JD model 400 rd baler. Yes model 500 had the shields installed to help keep baler operator from getting caught while operating a baler. Compared to newer model rd balers those first balers made bundles of hay not tight bales & were very difficult to operate.

Unless they have made some real changes those Deere balers were the biggest piece of junk designed to roll hay. Would plug starting a bale and would take a long time to get cleaned out so you could plug it again right away. Dad traded his for a NI and never looked back.

The difference in ease of operation between the JD 410/510 rd balers & all models produced after is a night vs day difference. 410/510 balers had only spring tension for bale formation & later JD rd balers had spring PLUS hydraulic tension for bale formation. Then when JD introduced the Mega-wide pickup on 467 & later model rd balers these balers became even easier to operate & make a good bale of hay.
