JD starter wrench

In JDSellers service call from he!! rant he mentions the special JD starter wrench. I've seen it, heard about it, but never had one. I use a socket and extension on my 4020. I have used it on other brands in a very similar predicament. Are some of the JD applications worse than the 4020?

Someday if you do enough you will encounter a screwed up half rounded nut that will refuse to come off without the special deere wrench. It is like alot of other special tools, you can get by but having one usually makes the job easier.

The Deere starter wrench JDE-80 made by OTC only works on Waterloo engines, the other engines have a nasty back bolt that I have bent a wrench special for..

I know what you mean by "rounded-off" bolts or nuts Tom,,I always put a new one on that top back one when I change a starter,,more than likely "I" will be the one taking it back off some day...

Works on many other model tractors - for the starter motor and the fuel injection pump.

The JDE80 is made by OTC and has only one useful end. The Snap-On version has double-ends.

I've got half a dozen in the tool box I've made from the el cheapo double box end 9/16 -1/2. Snug it in the vise...add a little heat...just the right twist and turn...and you just saved yourself several $$

For my 4020, I bought a 9/16 socket made with a short u-joint, 3/8 drive. Ground down the socket to about 1/4 deep. Works well for me.

That wrench works real well to get the nosecone bolt in front of the generator on 50-520 tractors.

hey tim, does that wrench (or the ones in the photos) work for the 40 series JD's like a 2240, 2440, etc...

They don't work so good if at all on the utility's the bolts are in a little different location, on the Waterloo starters there is very little clearance between the starter body and the bolt head, this is why a ground down socket sorta works, until the bolt backs out far enough to lock it up against the starter body , this "fancy" wrench hooks in behind the solenoid housing and gets onto the bolt head, even with this it's kinda like "milking a Mouse" to get a tight one out..

Well they "may" work on a utility,,Darn it..I have just been looking in between loading tractors and making out tickets. The snow went away enough to take a few home (of course we didn't have much), I got a 7810 and a 4440 loaded up for a ride now..
