JD wheel hub clamps

I installed some different cast iron wheels on my 41 John Deere B. When I put the clamp on and tightened the three bolts it seemed like the clamp went on pretty far. Is it normal for the clamps to go almost to the bottom of the taper on the hubs? I put anti-seize on the taper. Has anybody used other things like plastic, shim material, or maybe wax paper?

In my service manual, it is recommended to wrap wax paper around the hubs before you slide the clamps on. This is supposed to make them easier to remove when necessary. As far as the clamps sliding down on the hubs, those old clamps can stretch during the years. Tighten the bolts evenly and if you have a small amount of clearance left, it should be all right.
