Jd2030 n/g engine

Have a JD2030 that now has antifreeze in oil.
Does anyone have input to cost & time to rebuild.
Got real hot last summer but, did not notice a problem till now. Thinking most likely cracked block.

If it's a cracked block, there's no overhauling it. If you're real lucky, it's a head gasket, an o ring on a sleeve or a cavitated sleeve that has a crack or pinhole.

cavitated sleeve have had two tractors do this 410b backhoe 302 loader tractor replaced sleeves and pistons in both, all wet sleeve engines are subject to this problem especially if you don't monitor the coolant ph.

My 1020 did it. It looked like there was a seam straight down the side of the sleeves. One cavitated all the way through and had pin holes in it.

Are you planning to rebuild it yourself or send it to a shop? An in-frame rebuild may work but something may be found that requires removing the engine, such as the crank needing work.

Guesstimate range of $1000 to $6000, could be more if a shop does it. Guessing is all anyone is doing until it is opened up and the problem found. Head gasket, cracked head, eroded sleeve, failed sleeve sealing O-rings, crankshaft damage from coolant in the oil, are some of the unknown things that can change the cost of the rebuild.

You might want to check for a good used engine. PartsASAP might have one. If you do go that route, you want a structural block for a tractor like the 2030. The structural blocks are smooth sided; the nonstructural ones have channels that stick out on the sides for rod clearance. Some compressors and generators used the 4219 with structural blocks. The 4239 should also fit but some of the attachments and attachment provisions on your current engine might need to change to the replacement engine.

Some things to consider. Is this your only tractor? Does it have a loader on it? Are you looking at replacing it, if you don't fix the engine? Have you priced out equivalent tractors?

Some will disagree but I would look for a good running used engine. I have known guys who found old air compressors, generators, water pumps with those engines for $1000 - $1500. You can get your tractor going now and later pull the tractor engine down yourself to see just what it needs, then decide to rebuild it or not.

Check salvage yards they may have a good engine, it might be a bit more, but they generally check them out some before selling.
