JD301-A engine oil amount?

My book states that the JD301-A takes 6 quarts of engine oil. Another part in the operating manual states that it takes 9 quarts. I was checking the oil on the dipstick as I filled it and after only adding 4 quarts, I'm above the fill mark on the dipstick. I'm going to wait until I start it to see if I have to add more. The engine was warm after using the tractor for about 45 minutes and I let it drain for a few hours. The operating manual has two different volumes written in it and I would guess that the dipstick is original so the fill marks should be actual. But 4 quarts don't seem like nearly enough oil for this tractor.

The oil filter will hold quite a bit of oil and if not changed, you'll need a quart less or so.

I changed the oil filter. I"ll have to check it after I start the tractor.
