JD4020 gear shift

I'm wondering if anybody can tell me , and this is according to ser#, why some 1971 & 1972 4020's have the straight syncro gear shift levers and some have the double bent ones and also why some have the round one on top of the other fuel filters & some have the glass square ones, and I'm aware of theleft side engine block being cast to accept an air conditioning pump, any insights on my questions would be helpful.

All late 71 and 72's have the tall gearshift and square glass fuel filters. They also have a hi low beam switch on the floor board and when new had single headlights,

When I worked at the JD dealer for several years, a lot of 4020s got changed over to glass fuel filter as it seemed to work better.

Well thats what I always thought,I have seen a half a dozen or more listed on Big Iron or Auctiontime that had the short gear shift lever but the ser# indicated they 71 or 72 models so I thought am I mistaken or is there something not correct on those tractors, at any rate thank you for your feedback, now maybe I'll sleep better at nights!

The photos below show serial breaks for round vs rectangular fuel filers for late model 4020. There is no serial break on gearshift handle.
