Jerky, chattering hydraulics John Deere 1630

I recently purchased a JD 1630 with 145 loader. Loader and 3 point hitch chatter when raising, but they have enough power to lift tractor. I have changed hydraulic fluid and filter, cleaned the sump screen and the screen on main pump, they were quite clean. I checked the valve above the filter housing on the 1 1/4 plug. The steering can be turned with one finger easily although it slowly seeps oil down the side of tractor. Pto brake doesn t work. It free wheels when it is disengaged but eventually stops. I don t have access to gauges yet but not sure where to plug them in. Your input appreciated. I m thinking I ve got an internal leak. Not looking forward to that. If I take the top off transmission will that provide me any clues?

The hydraulic control is mounted on the loader arm. The return line goes back to the filter housing. No lines use the hydraulic blocks a back of the tractor. And as I said the 3 point hitch arms chatter when used also, but have a lot of power like the loader.

I'll suggest to check hyd stand-by pressure which should be 2250-2350 psi. With hyd oil at operating temp, 3pt raised, engine operating at idle speed look in hyd filler hole behind seat for moving/spraying oil. Moving oil indicates leaking rockshaft control valve seals. Inoperative pto brake could be caused by faulty brake piston seals which would contribute to poor hyd operation.

Thankyou for the ideas. I will track down the supply line for the loader control valve. Also will check the movement of oil in the filler cap. Still trying to track down some gauges to test the stand by pressure and will also check pressure on the hydraulics at rear of tractor. Where would be the best place to check the standby pressure?

Ive done some more inspecting on the 1630. The supply line to the loader is teed into what I believe is the pressure relief valve on right
hand side of the transmission. The other half of the tee goes to the rear hydraulic directional control valve body. Also Ive looked into the
transmission through the transmission fill/cap/hole behind the seat. There wasnt any spraying or misting of oil at all. I could see a very small
current of oil in the fluid. Nothing alarming that I would attribute to a leak. More likely oil entering the transmission case from a return line? I
dont know why but the pto brake may be working after all. With no implement/mower attached to the pto the shaft stops quickly after
disengaging the pto. There would be no implement momentum involved I guess but you can turn it by hand. Still havent located any gauges
to test pressures.

My 1640 required a complete rebuild of the rockshaft piston seal and control valves .

Rebuild of the power steering column . New oil rings and gasket on the independent PTO control .
Between age, use and the previous owner possibly using the incorrect spec fluid . She was leaking internally .

Your tractor is at least 51 years old , so nothing should be a surprise .
